SMSF

what is a SMSF?

A Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF) is a private super fund that you manage yourself, giving you control over investment decisions. Unlike retail or industry super funds, an SMSF requires you to be both the trustee and member, making you responsible for compliance, tax, and investment management.

Control and Flexibility

Choose how and where your super is invested, including direct property, shares, and other asset classes.

Potential Cost Savings

For larger balances, SMSFs can be more cost-effective than traditional super funds.

Tailored Investment Strategies

Align your super investments with your personal financial goals and risk tolerance.

Who is the Trustee?

The fund members act as trustees, either individually or through a corporate trustee structure.

Responsibilities

Trustees must manage investments, ensure compliance with super laws, lodge annual tax returns, and act in the best interests of all fund members.

Corporate Trustee

A company acts as the trustee, offering increased asset protection and easier succession planning.

Bare Trust

Required if the SMSF is borrowing to invest in property under a Limited Recourse Borrowing Arrangement (LRBA).

Number of Trustees

An SMSF can have up to four members, and each member must be a trustee. If using a corporate trustee, each member must be a director of the company.

Frequently Asked Questions.

Managing an SMSF is a major commitment, requiring time, expertise, and strict compliance with regulations. While it offers control and flexibility, it’s not suitable for everyone. Careful consideration is needed to ensure it aligns with your financial goals and capacity to manage the fund. Here are some frequently asked questions to help you decide.

What is the minimum balance?

There is no official minimum, but we generally recommend to have at least $300,000 in your fund to make an SMSF financially viable and cost-effective.

What are the costs?

Costs can include accounting, auditing, legal, and administrative fees. These vary based on the complexity of your fund and the number of investments you hold.

Can I invest in property?

Yes, SMSFs can invest in residential or commercial property, but there are strict borrowing and compliance rules if you’re using a limited recourse borrowing arrangement (LRBA).

What happens if I don't comply with regulations?

Non-compliance can result in penalties, fines, or the fund being disqualified by the ATO, which could affect the tax advantages of the SMSF.
